Why do Irish have red hair?

I am just curious, since lots of people I know who is irish, have red hair. I am even irish, and I have bright red hair (Its natural)

So I am wondering why this is true...I am not saying EVERYONE who lives in ireland have red hair.

Why do Irish have red hair?

"Professor Jonathan Rees conducted a study of redheads at Edinburgh University. He identified the "gene for red hair" the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R), found on the 16th chromosome. He found that this single gene was responsible for red hair."

"The highest percentage of natural redheads in the world is in Scotland (13%), followed closely by Ireland with 10%. In the US, about 2% of the population are natural redheads."

Why do Irish have red hair?

hmm well do you live in Ireland? Because actually, the Irish make fun of people that have red hair. Seriously, it's like a bad thing. I lived there for abit (I was in the north). And they also think it's silly that Americans label red heads from Ireland, because that's not what it's about. When in a bookstore in America, you look at a calendar for Ireland and they have a red-headed child on it, they think it's ridiculous.

Why do Irish have red hair?

Celts most certainly do not have genes for red hair.

Pure celts will have jet black hair and grey eyes and are usually quite tall.

The red hair in the Irish comes from the Swedish (Viking) invasions. When the Celtic and Pictish inhabitants of the islands were overun and raped. The Irish are a combination of the Celts and Vikings and the Viking ancestry is were they get their red hair.

Not everyone has red hair because their are some families that are still mostly pureblooded.

The ones that have blonde hair, are descendants of the rapes that the Anglos (Germanic) committed.

Why do Irish have red hair?

it's the viking blood I suppose. anyone with red hair has viking ancestors. the celts were blond so don't blame them. I think I've a bit of both in me because my hair used to be red but it turned brown, and then blonde. I dyed it black so I don't look like a bimbo though.....
