Red Heads and dyeing hair?

Do you know what product is good for dye red hair into brown? I have used temp. hair color that is L'oreal color plus and the black turned my hair brown. Kinda werid. So I got Clairol Temp. dye and I'm not sure if its going to work.

I have a friend that is a redhead, and I have seen from her experience that trying to color red hair can be a problem. The red has a tendency to show through in most dyes. (hence why there's a tiny label on boxed dyes that states that people with red hair will have redder results.) She used a temp. brown dye on her hair at one time, but the result was auburn instead of true brown. If having some red in your hair even after coloring it doesn't bother you, then have at it. It's less damaging to your hair. A permanent color in the right shade and tone would probably be your best bet if you wanted to completely eliminate the red though. If you were to choose to go the permanent route, I would recommend purchasing a shade with an ash tone. Ash tones are better at reducing the appearance of red and golden tones in hair. A few at-home dyes I can recommend are Clairol Natural Instincts (if you're going temporary), and Garnier 100% Color, Herbal Essences Color, or Clairol Hydrience if you'd want to go permanent. Good luck!

I'm a redhead too! Lots of redheads have trouble dying their hair...if you want to go permanent, I suggest going to a pro. They might strip your hair first, then use dye, because natural redheads have hair that sometimes resists the dye (it won't take). I use herbal essence level 2 just to brighten my hair. It's semi-perm and will last about 3 weeks. Hope this helps!

I'm not a red head, but I have used a million hair products. Have you ever tried Natural Instincts? It's a semi-permanent that lasts 28+ shampoos and I have found that it is fairly inexpensive, easy to use, covers well and looks great! I colored mahogany over my bleached blonde hair and it looked very flattering and natural. The difference between temporary and semi-permanent hair color is that temporary gives your hair way less color, so it doesn't cover up so well what's underneath. The good similarity between the two is that neither of them use ammonia or peroxide (but make sure to read the label) so they won't be as bad for your hair as a permanent dye.

O keep your hair red! Your hair is probably beautiful the way it is. Sorry I just thought I would say that I know it's not helpful for dyeing your hair...
